AMD has announced the AMD FidelityFX SDK v1.1 update, which features the much-anticipated v3.1 update to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3. The GDC 2024 reveal highlighted several significant changes in AMD FSR 3.1.

Frame Generation
Frame Generation now works separately from upscaling, and it can be used with any upscaler, including third-party options.

Upscaling Quality and Features
FSR 3.1 brings better detail preservation, less flickering over time, and new features like direct letterboxing support.

AMD FidelityFX API
The FidelityFX API integration is necessary, providing a small set of exported DLL functions for effect operations.

Prebuilt, signed versions make sure that the DLLs are stable and can be upgraded.

Vulkan Support
FSR 3.1 supports the Vulkan graphics API, needing additional data from the game-side application.

Frame Generation Enhancements
Updates and changes ensure high-quality frames and improved frame timing. To optimize frame timing, disable Anti-Lag in AMD Software -> Gaming Graphics settings.

    Recommendations for Frame Generation Use

It’s important to aim for at least 60 frames per second (FPS) to ensure a smooth gaming experience before making any adjustments to the frames. Adapt the game’s graphics, resolution, and upscaling quality to match your hardware capabilities and system specifications.

If you have a compatible AMD FreeSync display, make sure to enable AMD FreeSync in the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition™ Application display settings. For AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 Series graphics cards running on Microsoft® Windows® 11 2022 Update, turn on Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) in Windows under Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics Settings.

To avoid frame pacing issues or stuttering, it’s recommended to disable AMD Radeon Anti-Lag in the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Application control panel.

    AMD FSR 3.1 Supported Products

AMD FSR 3 and FSR 3.1 are open technologies that work on a wide range of products and platforms, including consoles, without needing machine learning hardware. When using FSR 3 and FSR 3.1 for super resolution upscaling and frame generation, specific hardware is recommended.

Supported and Recommended Hardware for Using AMD FSR 3 with Upscaling and Frame Generation:

    • AMD:
      • Supported: AMD Radeon™ RX 5000 Series and above
      • Recommended: AMD Radeon™ RX 6000 Series and above
    • NVIDIA:
      • Supported: NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 20 Series and above
      • Recommended: NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 30 Series and above

Note: It is not recommended to use frame generation on products lower than the above recommendations. Frame generation performance will depend on the capabilities of the GPU, and older hardware may not provide an optimal experience or significant performance improvement.
