If you’ve tried using different gaming mouse, you’ve probably use different softwares just to configure the settings like Polling Rate, DPI, or RGB lighting.

I don’t have a problem with these programs, but what ticks me is that they act like a bloatware, eats a chunk of your ram, or works on certain operating system.

That’s where OpenMouse comes in to be the hero for us.

OpenMouse is a free, open-source project that aims to let users configure supported gaming mice directly from a web browser. Instead of downloading software, you simply connect your mouse through the website and change its settings there.

The website uses WebHID, a browser feature that allows websites to communicate with supported hardware once you give permission.

It’s worth noting that OpenMouse is still under development. The project is not publicly available yet, but the developers have announced that an Early Access version is coming soon. Once released, users will be able to try the browser-based configuration tool and help test supported devices.

What will you be able to change?

If the mouse you are using is supported, you’ll be able to adjust this configurations:

• DPI
• Polling Rate
• RGB Lighting
• Buttons Functions
• Onboard Profiles

Device information and setting changes are not uploaded to an OpenMouse server. It will be directly saved to your mouse’s onboard memory.

Does it work with every mouse?

Not yet.

Since the project is still in development, OpenMouse will only support selected mouse models at first. Every manufacturer uses a different way of communicating with their devices, so support has to be added one mouse at a time.

If your mouse isn’t supported, you’ll still need to use the manufacturer’s software.

Why is this useful?

For most people, it simply means one less program to install.

If you only need to change your mouse settings once, opening a website is much easier than downloading software that you’ll probably never use again.

It’s also a good option for users on macOS or Linux, where some gaming mouse software isn’t available.

OpenMouse is a very interesting project that could make mouse configuration much simpler. Instead of downloading another application, you could just open a website, connect your mouse, make your changes, and you’re done.

With Early Access expected to launch soon, it’ll be interesting to see how many devices are supported and how the project grows over time
