As I walk around the booths for Computex 2026, most of the brands are following a new trend. No, I’m not talking about the IPS/OLED AIO Displays, I am talking about the Uni-fans. Instead of the usual trio of 120mm fans, we’re starting to see more 240mm and 360mm uni-fan configurations where multiple fans are combined into a single modular unit.

From a design standpoint, it makes sense. Uni-fans simplify cable management, reduce visible clutter, and offer a cleaner overall look. But while most booths were eager to talk about aesthetics and convenience, I kept asking a more practical question, one that I know a lot of users would ask before buying.

What happens if a fan blade breaks on a uni-fan?

It’s a simple concern, but one that caught several representatives off guard. A few smiled, some laughed, and most needed a moment before answering. The responses, however, were surprisingly consistent: if something goes wrong with the fan, the entire uni-fan unit would need to be replaced.

That answer isn’t exactly reassuring.

Unlike traditional setups where a single faulty fan can be swapped out easily and cheaply, a unified design introduces a single point of failure. If one section breaks, whether it’s a blade, bearing, or motor, you’re potentially replacing the whole assembly.

I brought this up directly during those discussions. From a user standpoint, it makes more sense to have replaceable components, particularly fan blades or individual modules. It’s not just the cost; it’s about sustainability and practicality. Not everyone wants to replace an entire unit over a minor issue.

Interestingly, some brands agreed with that feedback. A few even mentioned that they are already exploring solutions. The idea isn’t new either. Thermaltake has already shown that modular or serviceable fan designs are possible, which means the technology is there.

Now it’s just a matter of whether more brands are willing to adopt it.

For now, uni-fans are clearly gaining traction, and we’ll likely see more of them hit the market after Computex. But as the design evolves, so should the approach to durability and repairability.

Because at the end of the day, clean aesthetics shouldn’t come at the cost of long-term usability.

We’ll have to wait and see what the next wave of AIO coolers brings.
